Thanks for the link, Charles. I wasn't familiar with Horace King. We all have much to learn.

Thanks, William. I couldn’t write an article like this without a link to your substack.

Wonderful start for Black History Month, Charles. But as you point out, it should be year round. Thank you for the link so that I can get even more expert historical perspective. So much remains hidden because it is truly horrific. And de facto segregation still exists.

The staircase photo reminds me of one my childhood favorite Antebellum homes in Columbus Mississippi called Riverview. I always dreamed of owning it, but not anymore, knowing the history of the free labor that built it. I think it sold in the last few years for right around one million. It sits above the banks of the Tombigbee.

Tombigbee is a great name for a river.

This is a wonderful article! How did I miss it? Love the slick reference to the book Middle Passage. That’s a great book.

Thanks. I don't even remember much about the book..been a very long time. I'm betting I wrote it before you subscribed! 😀

I'm woefully behind on my reading. Another great essay-I learned so much. I must watch Hidden Figures. I've heard it was an incredible film. Thanks for bringing us the story of Horace King, 👏👏👏👏
