During the Industrial Revolution, French workers, especially those in the textile industry, wore wooden shoes called "sabots".

These workers would sometimes throw their sabots into the machinery, particularly looms, to intentionally damage or disrupt the machines and halt production.

This act of disruption, using the sabot as a tool, is believed to be the origin of the word "sabotage".

Sabotage is especially effective when performed from the inside.

I am not suggesting anyone get paid to disrupt the operations of a quality department such as ICE; I'm just pointing out possibilities.
