Substack was great platform that encouraged writing. Free unedited writing there are still great writers here but for me lately Substack seems to turning into another instagram if I want instagram then that’s where I’d be. I came here because I have met and interacted with great writers. Like minded writers who care about what they write about. Care about their country and most of care about humanity and I say to everyone I’ve subscribed to ❤️!!
That is one of the great features of Substack, yes indeedy. I’ll confess that I do use the Notes feature (Instagram!), but if you’re a Substack writer like me that started off with few subscribers, that’s about the only way to get new subscribers. Great stories that go viral, help, too, of course. Thanks for the comment!
You beat me to it…for the last several weeks, this has frustrated me. I see "Listen now!" or "Watch” and I shut down because I. DONT. HAVE. TIME. I want to read words because I can absorb them faster. Personally, I think doing the audio/video stuff is sort of lazy, unless you’re Acosta … and even then, I dont always have the time for him.
Thank you! I didn’t say this in the article because I didn’t want to sound like that guy telling people to get off his front lawn, but the hell with it: There is not any kind of video content on Substack I can’t find on YouTube or or elsewhere. I dropped by a live video conversation the other day because I know the writer from a discord channel and such and she’s a lot of fun, but, that was pretty much a one-off, lol.
I have no shelf control; a sticker I just bought for my work mug. Like you I read extremely fast and learned how to skim and retain at an early age. But as a child, going to the library and reading was a part of just about everyone’s life. We biked to the library, selected books, climbed a tree and settled into reading. My best friend’s dad took us on trips to the library. Everyone did some kind of reading; we had varied taste but we read. Students can’t write well either. You’d be surprised how many penmanship booklets I send out to students. In many ways it’s the parents who didn’t model the behavior that helped create the situation. One of my children has dyslexia and is now an avid mystery reader. We need to reinvigorate a love of the physical act of reading and of holding a book.
Thanks for the awesome comment. I could almost visualize you at the library.
If you ever need to send a coded message in a crowded room, just write something in cursive. You’ll be able to let even people you don’t want knowing what you are saying pass it along to someone who is fluent in cursive. It’s a great trick, and better than the most rigorous encryption tools. :-)
I agree with most of your article. We need an opt out button to be able to keep the tics off! However, I was just now driving, and I was able to listen to a podcast related to economics, and chances are I'd of not made it a priority to read it.
I feel very strongly without any data or evidence that we are where we are politically due to the lack of readers in our society.
Thanks, Charles. I need to figure out how to make these available for voice overs. I know there's a facility for that here on Substack, but I haven't figured out how it works yet. Thanks for reading!

This was a great essay, as always. 👏👏👏👏👏

They can't read. They can't write. But they are very good at digging samples from their noses. A perfect skill of the AI age.
I’m with you. I have no interest in videos. I haven’t even listened to an audiobook.
